portrait shoots on location

We were commissioned by the estate agency Marr-Johnson and Stevens to create a catalogue of images that they could use on their website and future client communications. They wanted images that were warm and inviting and set in a location that was recognisable to the high end clients that they usually deal with.

The decision was made to host the shoot on location in one of the properties they were selling, which posed a few unique challenges. We had limited details about the interior, so we brought a wide array of equipment to ensure we could handle any lighting or backdrop needs. This flexibility proved essential, allowing us to adapt to the property’s features and create polished, professional shots.

Natural light and its challenges

The natural light pouring in from one side of the space was both an asset and a challenge. When the window was behind the photographer, it provided soft, even lighting perfect for flattering portraits. However, any other angle resulted in uneven lighting, with one side of the subject brightly lit and the other in shadow. To balance this, we used reflectors and supplementary lighting.

On the other hand, these high contrast shots could sometimes deliver great results. For a series of images we embraced the contrast to create something more interesting and offer the client an alternative to the standard soft look portrait that often comes with a large light source behind the camera.

A wide collection

By adapting to the unique lighting conditions and using both natural and artificial light, we produced a versatile collection of images. This approach allowed us to capture a range of moods, from bright and airy to sophisticated and shadowed, giving Marr-Johnson and Stevens a portfolio that reflects the character of their team and the high quality of their properties.
