A summer feel in the studio
Focus Stacking
We were asked by Tesco’s wines to capture their new range of wine at the Captivate studio with an emphasis on both clarity and warmth.
One of the primary challenges was photographing multiple wine bottles in a single frame. To achieve precise focus across all labels, we needed to take multiple shots at various focus points and then layer them in post-production to create a sharp, cohesive final image. This technique, known as focus stacking, ensured that each label was legible and the bottles’ textures were crisp, avoiding the softened effect that might occur if captured in a single shot.
Summer Lighting
The client requested a ‘summer’ feel for many of the wines, so we designed the lighting setup to emulate natural sunlight, giving the bottles a warm, inviting ambiance. Achieving this involved positioning a large, powerful light behind the set to cast a hard shadow on the floor of the scene, mimicking sunlight streaming through a window. This setup helped evoke the essence of warm summer days, enhancing the appeal as the perfect choice for sunny gatherings.
The Final Product
Balancing both technical precision and the desired seasonal mood required close coordination between our lighting, camera, and post-production setups. With each bottle shot individually to ensure label clarity, we could then layer the images to maintain focus while retaining the sunlit feel that the client wanted. The result was a series images that advertises the wines in a way that felt natural. Each bottle stands out and the lighting set up conveys the summery feel Tesco envisioned.
